Challenge

Hot UPW temperature control at the point of use was a primary problem on 1 of 2 loops serving an HVM fab. The connection of the 2 loops to each other resulted in pressure control issues and anticipated demand was beyond the capacity of the system.

Solution

A root cause investigation, including hydraulic analysis, was conducted determine root cause of pressure control issues. The underlying issue was revealed after rigorous analysis of trend data. A creative solution was implemented to combine the 2 systems into one and combine supply mains into 3 separate parallel mains to deal with pressure loss issues in the long building. To address timing challenges, the design scope was broken in to short term measures to immediate increase capacity, while in parallel, the longer term, more intensive solutions to support the full ramp were designed and constructed.

Barriers

The primary barrier was time. The fab ramp was required aggressive design and construction execution. However, the root causes of the problems were not understood by the operations team.

Impact

Fab demand was met on schedule. The optimized conceptual design creatively maximized the reconfigured existing equipment and minimized capital outlay. Combining the existing UPW mains and adding a parallel main provided additional cost savings and avoided a shutdown. In the course of the analysis, FTD identified an approximate annual energy savings of $107k based on optimization of the Hot UPW Loops and heating water.
