Challenge

To have a framework adequate to support meeting corporate water conservation goals, the client needed to quantify and understand site water use, conservation, reclamation, and discharge. Inconsistent measurement and accounting methods were utilized across facilities. These practices needed to be systematized to ensure a standard company reporting structure to maximize water conservation and reclaim potential at each site.

Solution

This was a first of its kind approach to standardizing water conservation and reclamation accounting. We drove communication, alignment and coordination with each site. The Water Management Application (WMA) was leveraged to organize the data and enable analysis of each facility, following SEMI standards for water conservation accounting. The WMA was customized with client specific features including the standardization of accounting and reporting structures.

Barriers

Each site had its own method for water and waste measurement and accounting, making alignment between all sites a continual barrier. Achieving alignment and understanding to enable corporate decision making required excessive communication and time of many individual stakeholders manipulating different tools. Site water management data lacked the organization and consistency to enable effective use in support of the goals.

Impact

The WMA identified system problems whose solving led to immediate meaningful water conservation. Future projects for water conservation were also identified. Accounting and reporting methods across all facilities were standardized. Without implementation of the WMA, several immediate water conservation opportunities may have remained unidentified and accounting and reporting methods would not be standardized. The value of the WMA to organize the data and enable effective decision making was clear for this effort.
