Challenge

The low hanging fruit of energy conservation had been harvested. The client had many further energy conservation ideas but had difficulty finding the resource to turn these ideas into projects. The goal of this effort was to begin with ideas generated by both the client and FTD in previous projects and either investigate feasibility and ROI or to develop the concept and prepare the documents to support getting a proposal from a detailed designer.

Solution

The feasibility of different energy conservation ideas was analyzed and to simulate energy consumption and determine potential savings of different projects, FTD utilized the Chiller Modeling Tool to reveal dynamics that led to no cost energy conservation measures. FTD site engineering resources gained a thorough understanding of field conditions and leveraged creativity to bring conceptual ideas into reality. We utilized our chiller modeling tool which uses factory performance data and real-world conditions to simulate energy consumption and to determine potential savings of changes implemented.

Barriers

There was a high level of complexity in understanding the implications and in implementing many client proposed energy conservation measures. This complexity included accurately quantifying the opportunity, utility routing, equipment location, and system sequence revisions.

Impact

FTD identified that many proposed energy conservation initiatives were too complicated in their execution and would result in minimal savings. New, creative solutions were developed, resulting in roughly $2M of annual savings with an average 5 years ROI. The FTD systematic approach and FTD proprietary energy consumption/savings modeling tools for the chillers, cooling towers, make-up air handlers and compressors all helped to drive the solutions and justifications as well as deliver cost savings impacts in this project.
